LetterKey
26 August 2025
LetterKey is a platform that helps seniors easily understand official letters by scanning and translating them into bite-sized summaries and audio, in their preferred language.

The Problem
Government documents like HDB and CPF letters are often written in complex English yet research shows that Singaporean seniors aged 55-65 have literacy skills below average, with the gap widening as they age. 7 in 10 seniors at the Senja Fei Yue Active Ageing Centre (AAC) need help in letter-reading assistance and follow-ups, overloading the social support system.
Our Solution
Introducing LetterKey, a senior-friendly platform that simplifies complex information by clearly explaining what seniors need to know and what actions they should take.
LetterKey is available as a physical kiosk and WhatsApp chatbot, so seniors can access it at any time and anywhere.
Understanding any document in 3 simple steps:
Choose your language : Select the language you're most comfortable with
Add your document : Scan or upload any document you need help understanding
Get your summary : Read the clear summary, listen to audio playback, or share it directly to WhatsApp for later reference
Impact
LetterKey partnered with People’s Association and Fei Yue Community Services to launch pilots at Bukit Panjang CC and Senja AAC.
During this pilot phase, LetterKey has successfully:
Launched kiosk and WhatsApp bot services at Bukit Panjang CC and Senja AAC
Achieved 150 total pilot users and processed more than 300 documents
25% retention rate on WhatsApp bot with some seniors came back to use LetterKey more than 5 times in the same week
Processed 13 types of documents including government letters, SMS messages, insurance documents, utility bills, and even medical documents
Translated documents in 4 main languages - English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil; and 2 dialects - Hokkien and Cantonese
Pilot Findings & Feedback
LetterKey x Seniors
We conducted user interviews at Bukit Panjang Community Centre during our pilot to validate our assumptions. One key finding: users unanimously preferred the mobile format over the kiosk due to convenience and accessibility. However, this preference may reflect the profiles of seniors at Community Centre, as these users typically have higher quality of life and tech literacy compared to Active Ageing Centre visitors.
LetterKey x AAC Staff
Our interview with a manager at Senja Fei Yue Active Ageing Centre revealed an important insight. While LetterKey successfully helps seniors "understand confidently" by translating and summarizing documents, there is a significant demand for the next level of support - helping seniors "act independently" by guiding them through follow-up steps. The manager noted that follow-up actions are the most time-consuming part of their letter assistance workflow, as seniors often struggle to complete these independently and require staff intervention.
